Extracting essential oils from plants is a delicate and complex process. The composition of essential oils makes them very vulnerable during extraction because they evaporate easily and can be compromised. Essential oils are most often extracted from plants through distillation, a process in which steam is circulated under pressure through plant material, thus liberating the plant’s aromatic compounds into the steam. As the steam cools, the mixture condenses and the essential oils are collected in their pure form.
dōTERRA uses a global network of artisans to provide the raw materials—sourcing—used for essential oil production. Using local artisans to source the raw materials for essential oils has the added benefit of creating industry for that particular community. In many cases, the harvesting of essential oil source plants has created jobs and opportunity where previously there was none. In this way, dōTERRA is helping health-conscious individuals find safe alternatives while also lifting entire communities and giving them hope for the future.
Co-Impact Sourcing works very closely with doTERRA’s Healing Hands Foundation to provide necessary elements to local growers and their communities. One of the things I love most about Co-Impact Sourcing is the schedule of payments so there is no “feast or famine” for the farmers. They get payments year-round which helps to provide a stable life for them and their family.
